Route Fri 29 May – Mangawhai Heads to Whangarei

May 29, 2009 on 7:37 am | In Daily routes | No Comments

Today I am heading for the Top 10 Holiday park in Whangarei (thanks again Top 10 for all your support) where I will catch up with my wife for a day or two and she will be my support crew for the weekend. Fantastic!! What does a support crew do? Hopefully sweep the road ahead clearing the broken glass and making me hot hot coffee every hour.

Route Thu 28 May – Leigh to Mangawhai Heads

May 28, 2009 on 4:26 pm | In Daily routes | No Comments

After being hosted by Team Torkington in Ti Point and well fed, I took the back roads to Mangawhai Heads which involved gravel roads, wild cows, and blue blue skies. I only got lost once, well not exactly lost but took a wrong turn following what appeared to be a paper road (one that only exists on paper, not in real life) that turned out to be a dead end. Google Maps’ fault. So I got to see the top of another hill two times more than I needed :)

Video log – Taupo to the Auckland Harbour Bridge (and across)

May 24, 2009 on 5:04 pm | In Video logs | 3 Comments

This week I cycled from Taupo all the way through Tokoroa, Te Aroha, Miranda, Orere Point, Howick, Auckland right to the Harbour Bridge and across it as part of getacross.org.nz, protesting for cycle and pedestrian access across the only harbour crossing.

Route Sun 24 May – Across the Harbour Bridge

May 24, 2009 on 2:38 pm | In Daily routes | 1 Comment

img_0398Today I cycled with a thousand other cyclists and walkers over the Harbour Bridge in protest of the lack of cycle/pedestrian access over the bridge. It was a very cool experience, and a beautiful day.

Despite NZTA saying no, the police let (no there was no busting through the barricades) us all across and blocked off the lanes of traffic, in fact all four north bound lanes. So instead of there being a controlled crossing on two lanes, there were a few disgruntled drivers finding themselves not able to get across the bridge for a couple of hours.

I met a heap of cool people who had heard about my ride up the country too. Awesome!

Route Fri 22 May – Orere Point to AUCKLAND

May 22, 2009 on 4:14 pm | In Daily routes | No Comments

Today I was joined by a film crew from TV3’s Campbell Live, and Helen joined be on her Bike for the ride from Orere Point to Clevedon. We talked all the way, a lot of it uphill, phew.

From Clevedon to Pakuranga I took a bad turn and found some monster hills, and I went up the steepest hill yet, honestly. It was mad. Nice view from the top tho.

Ahhh, so I am in Auckland for a few days now taking a break before the last leg.
