Route Sun 24 May – Across the Harbour Bridge
May 24, 2009 on 2:38 pm | In Daily routes | 1 Comment
Today I cycled with a thousand other cyclists and walkers over the Harbour Bridge in protest of the lack of cycle/pedestrian access over the bridge. It was a very cool experience, and a beautiful day.
Despite NZTA saying no, the police let (no there was no busting through the barricades) us all across and blocked off the lanes of traffic, in fact all four north bound lanes. So instead of there being a controlled crossing on two lanes, there were a few disgruntled drivers finding themselves not able to get across the bridge for a couple of hours.
I met a heap of cool people who had heard about my ride up the country too. Awesome!

I am incredibly jealous of all those who got to ride the bridge! Happy Birthday, Aucklands Aorta!
I think it should be noted how different the official media spin on this event is from what you witnessed.
Apparently they closed all four lanes rather than just restricting protest to the clipon because they were afraid of walking causing clip on sway, in turn leading to protesters trying to escape onto the inner lanes.
