About

Vaughan Rowsell, a Kiwi technologist and businessman, is riding a bike from Stewart Island to Cape Reinga solo.

At the end on 2008 after hearing a lot of people worry about the impending recession and fearing the worst. Vaughan was adamant that instead of waiting for the worst, now was a great time for companies and individuals to take on the challenge of the financial crisis and find new ways to change and succeed.

“Kiwis are not really a bunch of whiners. Traditionally we have tended to take one look at advestity and then find a way to conquer it!”

To prove the point, Vaughan took a look at himself and seeing an very obese unfit workaholic, set out to get in shape and do at least one thing he previously thought was impossible for him to ever do, riding the length of New Zealand on a bike.

As Vaughan goes, he is also raising money for TASC (The Agency of Spinal Concerns), a charitable trust that does great work helping people with severe spinal cord injuries to rehabilitate and adjust to their new life in a wheelchair. TASC operates from Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital Spinal unit. Vaughan’s mother is a paraplegic of 45 years this year, and she gives all of her time to help within the disabled community.

“People have a choice, to either sit on their arse and do nothing, or they can give something new a go. My mother and other spinal cord injury sufferers who are bound to a life on wheels will clock up more than the 2600kms I am cycling and they daily do more amazing things than most. I guess my ride is also a tribute to mum, and her 45 years in a chair.”

“If by doing this trip I can change myself for the better, and raise some much needed funds to help others then the net effect is all positive. So things cant all be that bad in these gloomy times.”

As he travels Vaughan will be documenting the journey, and his progress can be followed on this blog and via Twitter by following @rowsell
